Fall Car Care Tips to Get Your Vehicle Winter-Ready

We’ve left summer behind, and winter is fast approaching in the Dudley and Webster areas! Our days will start to shorten, and cold weather will arrive before we know it! Fall is that sweet spot between the two seasons- temperatures are relatively mild, and there are lots of fun activities to enjoy with friends and family. It is also one of the best times to give your car some love and get it ready for winter! Read on to learn some helpful ways you can care for your car this season.

Inspect the Engine Hoses and Belts

Hoses carry all of the fluids your engine needs, so you don’t want them to be broken or leaking. Check if there are any holes or loose clamps to be seen. You can squeeze them to check for leaks and to see how they feel. If there are any that are brittle or extremely spongy, you will want to get them replaced.

Engine belts are necessary for your engine to be able to run, so if you have a belt break, your car will be stuck! Look at the underside of the belts to see if there is any cracking or fraying. Newer types of belts often don’t show visible signs of wear. The recommended time between changes varies by manufacturer, so if you have questions about when you should get it changed, contact a professional.

Check All of Your Fluids

You will want to check your oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. If you aren’t sure where these are in your vehicle, consult the owner’s manual. Top them off as indicated in their respective reservoirs.

You might consider adding cold-weather wiper fluid if you haven’t already. Unlike all-weather wiper fluid, cold-weather wiper fluid won’t freeze in the tank or on your windshield.

Listen to Your Brakes

The sounds your brakes make are their way of communicating with you. Are they squealing at stops? Your pads might be beginning to wear down. Do you hear grinding noise when you brake? You’ve probably worn through your brake pads, and now the caliper is rubbing against the brake rotor. You’ll need to get your car into a professional right away to address the problem!
