Common Brake Light Problems and How to Fix Them

Your vehicle is full of a variety of different warning signals. Your brakes are one of them that you want to pay attention to. When your brake system warning light is on, it could indicate that you are running into or soon will run into trouble with your brakes. You always want to pay attention to all of the warning signals with your vehicle, especially our brake system warning light.

So, what are some of the reasons why your brake light may be coming on? There are several different brake warning lights in your vehicle. These revolve around everything from the brake pads themselves to brake fluids, the ABS, and more. It is critical to know what the lights are, what they mean, and how to take care of them.

Brake System Lights Are for Safety

The thing to remember with brake system warning lights is that they are there to help keep you safe. The goal is to allow the brake warning lights to make you aware when you will run into trouble. They could be triggered for several different reasons, including faulty brake lines, brake pads that are entirely worn, and more.

It is very important to understand what all of the different brake lights mean. When you understand them, you will have a better idea of what could be wrong with your vehicle.

Brake Indicator Light

The first and most common warning light you will encounter is a brake indicator light. The light will just say the word “brake,” or it could have an exclamation point with a circle around it. There are a few different things that this light could be telling you. The first thing is that you could have a low level of brake fluid. If the brake fluid level is low, you want to take action and fill up the brake fluid holder. There also could be a brake fluid leak that you are dealing with. Either of these issues are things you want to take care of immediately.

Anti Lock Brake System Light

Have you ever seen the ABS light pop up on your dashboard? This is for your anti-lock brake system. When you are driving in poor conditions, it helps to keep the wheels from locking up when you brake on them hard. The system could have wheel speed sensors, wiring issues, or more. This can all lead to that ABS light coming on.

Brake Pad Light

You may also be getting a warning light that pertains to your brake pads. This is another light that looks like a circle that sits inside two brackets. This could mean that your brake pads have worn down to a point where they need to be replaced.

Circled P Light

The circle with the P inside it means you have your parking brake light on. This indicator usually means that you have your parking brake fully engaged. It could also mean that your parking brake component is worn out. You want to avoid driving with the parking brake on as it can wear down the brake pads immensely.
